Australia’s Federal Government has
decided the next step in the mission to stop the bullying epidemic across the
nation. The commissioner will target online bullying, with powers to fine
social media websites and apps, forcing offending posts to be taken down.
Paul Fletcher, the Parliament
Secretary for Communications, introduced the Enhancing Online Safety for
Children Bill 2014, to parliament on Dec. 3 2014; with the ultimate goal of
protecting the 20 percent of 8 to 17 year olds that he said have been victims
of cyber bullying.
According to the legislation, cyber
bullying material constitutes anything seen to be “seriously threatening,
seriously intimidating, seriously harassing or seriously humiliating” to
Australians under the age of 18 on social media or through digital
communication.
The e-safety Commissioner will also
be responsible for adopting/creating, administering and accrediting online
child safety programs with AU$7.5 million given to in order for them to be
efficiently allocated to schools.
