School Shooting in Maryland

Today was the first day back to school for many students around the country, however not many of them had the same experience as a Perry Hall High School in Baltimore, MD. Around 10:45 this morning, a 15-year-old male student walked into the Cafeteria of the high school and shot a a round from his gun. Quick acting faculty managed to grab him just as he let off a second round, but held him down to prevent further shots from being fired.

Unfortunately the gunman managed to shoot a 17-year-old student allegedly in the back. Though the student survived, he was Medflighted to the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center.

Many students who were interviewed had no idea what was going on at the time, stating they thought the sound was a door slamming or bag popping, but after the second shot most began to panic and run from the school, while others were locked in classrooms. Many students ran to a near-by shopping center where parents later met them with relief at finding their children uninjured.

Bullied Student in Japan Commits Suicide

This is an article that Becca Levy found about a student in Japan who committed suicide last month and her reaction to such a tragedy.

"I don’t understand how people think that it is okay for any of this to occur. Besides the fact that the child that killed himself was only 13 years of age, he was also forced to, “Practice suicide”. Clearly not only the bully victim, but the bully himself, is troubled, and must get help as well. For someone to be able to believe that it is okay to push someone to “practice suicide” proves that something has gone terribly wrong in their life that needs attention immediately. Both the bully and the bully-ee need help, not just the bully-ee. They are both victims. It is also forgotten how suicide affects everyone. This boys family, friends, classmates that he’s never spoken to, and even us here in America who have read this story, have been affected. This took place in Japan, which shows that bullying is a world-wide tragedy."

Ben Cohen and the Stand Up Anti-Bullying Foundation

Ben Cohen was once a world famous, World Cup-winning Rugby player (also known as the David Beckham of Rugby) but in 2011, he gave it all up to create the Stand Up foundation - an anti-bullying foundation focused on the treatment of the LGBT community. Cohen, who is married and has twin daughters, is far from gay, but openly supports the community.

Cohen, who is now in his thirties, lost father back in 2000. His father tried to stop an attack on a fellow employee and was brutally beaten and later died of his injuries.
