Backstreet’s Back, Against Bullying

Even twenty years after the band formed, The Backstreet Boys are still going strong. With their new album, In A World Like This, that was released just a week ago on July 30, 2013, they are using their fame to spread a powerful message: to stop bullying.

Fans that had committed suicide because they were being bullied are said to be the inspiration to one of the songs on the album, called “Madeleine.” One of the band members, A.J. McLean, heard about many stories of gay teens that were being bullied in California which ultimately lead to their suicides. Hearing about all of this negativity really upset him and inspired he and his band to encourage their fans to be content with who they are and to not let bullying discourage them.

With the statistics of teen suicides due to bullying being at a record high in the United States today, this album chose the perfect time to be released. As McLean describes the album’s “Madeleine,” he says “It’s a song about hope, just believing in yourself, not listening to what anyone else says. Love yourself,” which is the perfect message to give teens the sense of hope that they really need.
