Brigham Young University conducted a new study that found
that children who fell victim to gym class bullying were less likely to
participate in physical actives a year later.
“One reason that normal weight kids may avoid physical
activity after being teased is that teasing can be related to physical skills –
for example, criticism to sport-specific abilities. Our measure of teasing
assessed both appearance/weight related teasing and teasing about physical
skills,” says Chad Jensen, a psychology professor at BYU.
Parents are being urged to help ease the emotional scarring
by teaching their kids some bully-proofing strategies. Role-playing with their
children can better prepare them for a real life situation.
