“Hair-Bullying” Becoming a Problem in the School System

While bullying in schools has gained more national attention recently, another form of bullying is becoming more prominent. “Hair-bullying” is when students are picked on or teased for their hair style and it is becoming a problem in schools for both the victims and school officials.
In the past month, two cases of such bullying have been reported and gained media attention and the school’s reaction is to blame. First, an 8-year-old girl in Virginia was told not to return to school unless she changed the appearance of her short-hair, claiming that it was not feminine enough. Shortly after, a 9-year-old girl in Colorado told a similar story where she was suspended for shaving her head in support of a friend with cancer.
