Yik-Yak, the controversy app, is the
star in a new incident that took place in Fayette County, Ohio. The app sparked
police presence at Washington Court High School.
A series of threats were posted
against Washington Court High School, all on Yik-Yak. The app allows users to
post comments anonymously and there’s no registration required on the
application. Users can only view “Yaks” if they are within a 10-mile radius of
where the original post mas made.
The threats have prompted school
officials to ban students from bringing bags, gym bags, as well as book bags to
school. Bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in by the FBI in order to thoroughly
investigate any of the possible threats.
Two students, ages 14 and 16 were
charged on November 7th with delinquency counts of inducing panic
and they are accused of posting on Facebook that a bomb had exploded at the
High School.
The district’s administration had
got together in order to try and find the best solution to this popularly
re-occurring incident. For now, students are only allowed to enter and exit the
school through two designated entrances and the sanctions set will be enforced
temporarily while the situation stabilizes.
