Parents Punished for their Children’s Offenses

A Wisconsin town is taking bullying into it’s own hands as an attempt to “crack down on harassment and emotional abuse among young people,” as it was stated in a Huffington Post article. This Wisconsin town will ticket and fine the parents of children who are repeatedly bullying others. They are referring to this step as the “parent-liability” approach. The parents will be fined $114 within 90 days of receiving a written notice regarding their child’s bullying.
The Wisconsin town hopes to break ground in the nationwide effort to reduce bullying among kids today. The reasoning behind this comes from the idea that sometimes parents have a difficult time believing their kids could do anything wrong such as bully another child, causing them to ignore the accusations about their children. This ordinance will be used in times when those types of parents are in fact being uncooperative. But is it fair to fine parents for their children’s mistakes? Or do you think it could indeed help end bullying in the long run?
