Student Pleads With Senator to Create Anti-Bullying Legislation

After being bullied dozens of times for being gay at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, James Anthony Scott is reaching out to local representatives. On December 4th he found a note on his locker with an offensive term for a gay man and a message that read, “Get out or die.” That was the law straw.

Scott’s mother, Amber Baker, was afraid for her son’s safety at school. To date, none of the alleged bullies have faced any form of punishment. Baker went to the school administrators who told her son that the bullies “have a right to have fun and laugh and be loud in their high school years.”

“The Student Non-Discrimination Act actually has already made it out of the HELP committee and is awaiting a vote on the floor of the Senate, while the Safe Schools Improvement Act has been referred to the HELP committee and is awaiting action there,” Peter True said.

This acts requires schools to “establish policies that prevent and prohibit conduct, including bullying and harassment,” that would get in the way of a student’s education.
