In Ankeny, Iowa a program known as Rock In Prevention is
being used as an anti-bullying tool in the elementary schools as well as high
schools. The program, which has targeted
alcohol and other drug abuse in the past is now changing gear in an attempt to
curb the massive problem of bullying.
The program has high school students meet with elementary school
students in order to teach about bullying and how it can be prevented. Pat McManus, the creator of the project, said
that the program benefits students two fold because the elementary school
students look up to the older kids are more likely to listen to them than
teachers or school administrators. It also helps the high school students
because the best way to learn something is by teaching it to others. This program is not only valuable for bullying
prevention but is also fun for both groups of students who get to make
connections with students they normally would never see.
