On March 5 of this year, near a bus stop, 14 year old Angel Green was found hanging from a tree. Near her bed at home she left a note for her mother to find, pointing to bullying as the reason for her death. This tragedy sparked anti-bullying legislation at the state capital.
In her note, Green wrote to students, “Have you ever thought about what you said to me? huh... maybe not! because you killed me everyday.” She ended the note, “P.S. It’s bullying that killed me. Please get justice.”
Her mother went straight to the state legislation to help push House Bill 1423, which would make schools accountable for bullying incidents, and would require training on how to spot and handle bullying, require bullying prevention measures to be put into place, and for all incidents of bullying to be reported to parents and students.
Green’s mother says she wants schools to have more training and for students to have support and resources to turn to, believing this will prevent further suicides caused by bullying.
