Assertiveness: The Anti-Bully “Vaccine?”

This riveting Psychology Today article examines characteristic traits of those most vulnerable to victimization by bullies. Research shows that bullies, as young as 8 years old, begin to select their targets based on certain character traits. Most often, these traits include extreme passivity, sensitivity to criticism, anxiety, insecurity, and low self-esteem.
Bullies realize that those who exhibit these traits are least likely to retaliate, and are most susceptible to malicious manipulation. The unfortunate reality, as bullies know, is that no one will stand up for the victim because they are unable to assert themselves.
Assertiveness is the ability to stand up for oneself in a non-aggressive manner. Self-assertion is a necessary life-skill; but for some, it means overcoming large mental barriers. While some are gifted with the ability to be assertive, others must overcome anxiety, low self-esteem, and other insecurities before they are able to assert themselves effectively and avoid victimization. Research indicates that self-confidence is the first step in becoming assertive; but is assertiveness alone enough to be considered the magical “vaccine against bullying?”
