After being bullied by a group of
girls for over a year, Rebecca Ann Sedwick, a seventh grader from Florida,
jumped to her death. According to the investigators, she was bullied through
various social network sites.
Hurtful messages stating that Rebecca should
“kill herself” and “go die” are leading causes to her taking her own life.
Rebecca’s mother noticed cut marks on her wrists last winter and got her help,
but it did not help, the bullying never ended. Her mother took her out of
school and homeschooled her and then enrolled her in a new school to get her
away from her bullies. With the evolution of technology and social media,
Rebecca was still bullied. Her bullies cyber stalked her and continued to send
hateful, disgusting messages. Her mother had no idea she was still being
bullied this year because Rebecca showed no signs. Her screen name was changed
to “That Dead Girl” and following that, she took her own life. Investigators
found searches for things regarding razor blades and drugs that would help her
kill herself. Computers and cell phones have been taken from the group of girls
responsible for Rebecca’s death. If enough evidence is collected, charges will
be pressed against the 15 girls.
