Teen Tackles a New Way to Help Kids Battle Bullies
Fifteen-year-old Yasmeen Scuderi, a South Floridian teenager with martial arts training, is teaching kids how to tackle bullies –literally. For over a year now, Yasmeen has been packing children and parents into her free anti-bullying seminars.
The seminars include examples of responses to verbally stand up against a bully – and, for times when that's not enough – how to do it physically. Yasmeen and her father explain to the audience that the goal is to put the bully on the ground and hold them, stopping them without hurting them. But some say a physical confrontation should never be the solution for bullying. Hilda Graham, a school safety consultant who focuses on the issue, said it's best just to walk away. Yasmeen emphasized greatly, “although you want to avoid the fight at all costs, the second rule is, if you are physically attacked, you need to defend yourself”.
