A well-organized recess in schools
has been proven to reduce bullying and helps to make students feel safer in
their school environment. Some parents were outraged when a D.C. elementary
school decided to cut the student’s recess time. Other parents argued that
students are at school to learn and teachers should be teaching.
Playworks, a
nonprofit that conducts recess nation-wide at low-income schools, studied the
different aspects of recess. They use coaches and volunteers to conduct games
and activities that are “vigorous, fun, and inclusive”. These games help to
boost children’s social skills and teach them to work out their problems
kindly, subliminally teaching them that bullying is not ok. Recess is a time
for children to regroup themselves and interact with their peers, and Playworks
helps enforce a positive environment.
