After two students were buillied into committing suicide in Tennessee
in 2011, state officials have cracked down on in and out of school bullying
across the state. Part of this effort
was to collect data on the number of statewide bullying cases in 2012 and the
numbers were reported last week.
The
Department of Education reported 7,555 (5,478 of them confirmed as actual
bullying) cases in the year which was shocking to everyone and will no doubt lead
to an increase in efforts to prevent bullying. Officials suspect that this
number is actually lower than the actual number of bullying incidents due to
some students not reporting them.
The number of incidents is further
broken down into types of bullying, such as race, gender, disability, etc. Bullying undoubted hampers the education
process and can go beyond the school room, especially with social media being
so popular among young people. With this
extremely high number in a single year the Department of Education will have a
difficult job going forward to keep as many students safe from bullying as
possible.
