Pearl Magnet High School, James Anthony Scott is reaching out to local

“Extreme Bullying’ Cases Defendant’s Been Convicted
The last of the four defendants in the ‘’extreme bullying”
case in St. Louis County has been convicted. 22-year-old Nicholas Nettles,

Vaughn have all been convicted and are now serving sentences that range from
five to seven years in prison.

The defensive coordinator, Dave

Parents Punished for their Children’s Offenses
A Wisconsin town is taking bullying into it’s own hands as an
attempt to “crack down on harassment and emotional abuse among young people,”
as it was stated in a Huffington Post article. This Wisconsin town will ticket
and fine the parents of children who are repeatedly bullying others. They are
referring to this step as the “parent-liability” approach. The parents will be
fined $114 within 90 days of receiving a written notice regarding their child’s

Scholarship Awarded
Mike Jeffries, Chairman and CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch announced that the company would offer a college scholarship to high school
students who persevere in the face of bullying, starting in 2014. This action
comes from the resurfacing of old comments made to Salon Media Group made by
Jeffries back in 2006. In an interview, he was quoted as saying that the
Abercrombie brand is exclusionary to those who are perceived as the “cool” kids

Tom Harkin (D-IA) released the Strengthening America’s Schools Act of 2013, which is an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that includes a variety of reforms designed to make American schools safer and more effective institutions. The bill includes Sen. Al Franken’s (D-MN) Student Non-Discrimination Act, SNDA, which is focused on preventing harassment, discrimination, and violence in the public school system targeted at gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.

National Anti-Bullying Program Enlists Young People
Heritage Minister James Moore announced the Canadian government would provide $250,000 in funding for a new national anti-bullying project run by The Canadian Red Cross. The project will train 2,400 teenagers on how to deliver bullying prevention workshops and connect with their peers. After training, each teen will commit to reaching out to at least 20 others in his or her community to create a larger conversation about bullying. The program will also host three youth-led forums, one each in British Columbia, Ontario and the Atlantic Region.

Protestors Make Their Voices Heard
18-year-old Benjamin O’Keefe took a stand against bullying when he started a Change.org petition to take action against Abercrombie’s exclusivity. After spotting Abercrombie CEO Mike Jeffries’ 2006 comments on the business news website Business Insider, O’Keefe asks for a public apology and a change in company policy, allowing larger consumers to comfortably wear Abercrombie clothing. Abercrombie & Fitch is making efforts to respond to critics’ claims that the brand excludes certain shoppers by sponsoring an anti-bullying campaign. But some of the retailer’s detractors are dismissing the move as “not enough” and “not sincere.”

11-Year-Old Anti-Bullying Activist Gets State Representative’s Award Revoked
Marcel Neergaard is an 11-year-old boy from Oak Ridge Tennessee who is taking a giant stand to stop bullying. Tennessee State Representative John Ragan received an award for “reformer of the year” in April after introducing the Classroom Protection Act, or the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, earlier this year. Marcel felt that Ragan didn’t deserve the award and immediately started a petition to revoke the title. His petition quickly received 50,000 signatures and the award was revoked.

Montana Schools Realizes It’s Time for Change
Jill Sharp’s bullying started in middle school and continued consistently into high school. Sharp felt that she could ignore her bullies and they would grow out of it but when years went by with no change Sharp approached her principal with a binder full of evidence in hopes that something would be done. Her principal recommended that Sharp take legal action but her home state of Montana doesn’t have any anti-bullying legislation at all. Every other state has such laws in place.

A Teacher's Investigation
When one thinks of bullying in school it’s usually between students. This article shows that teachers and faculty are sometimes involved. In Appleton Wisconsin, a 15 year old student at Appleton North High School named Benji Backer, was harassed by teachers and faculty for being conservative and supporting Mitt Romney in the last election. According to Backer, he was harassed, called names and witnessed other students being indoctrinated. This happened after these same people emphasized the wrongfulness of bullying against homosexuals and pretty much anyone else, but that didn’t seem to stop them from punishing Backer for his political views.

After several high profile suicides of teens and children who were relentlessly bullied at school and online over the past several years, it seems that bullying is now a market for profitability. WorldCat, a worldwide library collection, said the number of English language books tagged with the word “bullying” in 2012 rose to 1,891. This is an increase of 500 titles over the last decade alone. Considering many high profile cases, it is no wonder that many authors and publishers are cashing in on the idea. Although some of them are attempting to bring aware to the bullying epidemic, others seem to be milking the epidemic for their own benefit.

High School Theater Program Targets Bullying
Students at Forest Grove High School in Oregon work on an
original play that deals with bullying in schools. “Marked” features students
with and without disabilities that is aimed to show the pain bullying can cause
and ways bystanders can help stop it. Theater director, John Anderberg, wrote “Marked”
based on personally witnessed accounts of bullying and other national bullying
cases themed on special needs victims. Bullying is a serious problem that adds
even more issues to the already troubling life of students with disabilities.
School events that can entertain as well as educated have proven to be
effective ways of spreading knowledge on important issues and should be
available to every student nationwide.

Anti-Bullying PSA Showcase Hosted in Tucson
The second-annual “Step Up, Speak Out, End Bullying”
showcase set to take place on Saturday features 30 second films produced by
students to gain allies against bullying. This year’s theme is “Bystander Empowerment”
where student films will emphasize the impact bystanders can have on different
bullying scenarios. Present at the event is the Tucson local author of “The
Good, the Bad, and the Bullies,” 12-year-old Levi Fallavollita, whose publication
has made great strides in the fight against bullying. Levi, along with students
and parents from around the city plan to attend to drive home the message that
bullying will not be tolerated and anyone can help in the fight.

Massachusetts High Schooler Wins Anti-Bullying Scholarship
High school senior, James Villalobos is awarded $1,500 for
spreading bullying awareness in his school. Villalobos attended the third
annual anti-bullying scholarship gala funded by The Republican’s
Newspaper-in-Education program hosted in honor of two students lost to suicide
due to bullying. The gala awards those who have made strides in the fight
against bullying with money to help further their efforts and aid their
education expenses. More than ever, sponsorships like this have been springing up
across the country and have gained a significant amount of support for bullying
victims and against bullies. We can all learn that standing up against bullying
not only benefits victims, but can also benefit yourself.
